About My Work

My work explores the intersection of psychology, spirituality, and the deeper questions of human existence. Drawing on more than forty years of clinical practice, Jungian analysis, and study of G. I. Gurdjieff’s transformational psychology, I focus on helping people understand the patterns that shape their inner lives and limit their awareness.

I am particularly interested in the relationship between Personality—the conditioned patterns we acquire in childhood—and Essence, the deeper potential within us that often remains undeveloped. Through practical observation and inquiry, I encourage people to see these patterns more clearly and to cultivate a more conscious relationship with themselves and the world around them.

Rather than offering abstract theory, my aim is to make complex psychological and spiritual ideas accessible through direct experience and everyday life. By bringing greater awareness to our thoughts, reactions, and assumptions, we begin to open the possibility of genuine inner development and a deeper understanding of consciousness.

About Stephen Aronson

Stephen Aronson
Stephen Aronson, PhD is a psychotherapist and clinical psychologist whose eclectic training ranges from cognitive-behavioral therapy to the alchemical approach of Carl Jung. His work bridges science and spirituality, rooted in a lifelong search to reconcile Universal Intelligence with rational understanding. Over more than four decades, he has studied and practiced transformational psychology, including the system introduced to the West by G. I. Gurdjieff, and completed over a decade of Jungian analysis. His goal is to translate these profound and complex ideas into clear, relatable language grounded in shared human experience.
Dr. Aronson earned a B.S. from Penn State University in 1965, and an M.A. and PhD in clinical psychology from the University of Connecticut in 1970. He initially taught at Arizona State University and Alfred University but soon left academia to immerse himself in clinical practice. His approach emphasizes direct experience: he believes true understanding comes from personal engagement rather than intellectual knowledge alone.
He retired in 2013 after 43 years in psychotherapy, education, and training, and now lives in rural Maine. Dr. Aronson has published on Spiritual Psychology in the Proceedings of the All and Everything International Humanities Conference and in Parabola, a magazine focused on myth, tradition, and the search for meaning.
He is also co-author of The Stress Management Workbook (1981, with Michael Mascia, MD, MPH). In addition to writing, he teaches and presents internationally on the inner search for meaning and consciousness, helping others explore the intersection of psychology, spirituality, and the human experience.
